When a regional NZ retail business fits out a new premises, they typically deal with three or four separate contractors — an electrician for power and lighting, a security company for cameras and alarms, an AV installer for in-store audio, and an IT provider for networking and EFTPOS. The scenario
A 200 m² retail space in a regional NZ town centre is being converted from a former office into a retail showroom. The fit-out scope includes:
- In-store background audio with four zones (showroom, fitting room, office, stockroom)
- IP camera coverage across the sales floor, stockroom and loading door
- Fob-based staff access on the rear entrance
- Structured cabling throughout — CAT6A data points, PoE to cameras and access points
- A wall-mounted digital signage display in the front window
- A small network rack housing PoE switch, NVR, DSP, and UPS
Integration approach
Rather than running separate audio, video, security and data cabling, the fit-out uses a single structured-cabling backbone. All cameras, access points, access-control readers and audio endpoints are PoE-powered from a managed switch in the rack. The DSP (BSS BLU-50) handles zone paging and background music with a wall-mounted volume controller in each zone. The NVR records all cameras at 5MP with 30-day retention, and the access controller integrates with the same PoE switch so adding or moving a reader is a matter of patching a port.
Why a single trade provider matters
When the audio, security, network and access control all land in the same rack and run off the same PoE infrastructure, there is no finger-pointing between contractors about whose cable is whose, whose switch port is at fault, or whose gear is causing interference. One site induction, one JHA, one handover document. For a regional business where every day of fit-out delay costs revenue, that simplicity has real value.
